We use established manufacturers such as Belgard where appropriate, with individual products and collections covered in our dedicated product resources.
For walls requiring additional support, geogrid reinforcement can be incorporated into compacted soil behind the wall to improve stability. Its use depends on factors such as wall height, slope, soil conditions, and nearby loads.
Natural stone retaining walls provide a more organic appearance and can work well for garden walls, terraces, and grade transitions. Miller Landscape determines the appropriate material and wall system based on the function and conditions of each site.
How We Plan & Build Retaining Walls
A retaining wall should be designed around the property rather than selected solely by appearance. Miller Landscape begins by evaluating the slope, soil, drainage, purpose of the wall, and nearby structures. We also consider conditions above and below the proposed wall, including driveways, patios, buildings, and other improvements that may affect the design.Once the site has been evaluated, we select an appropriate wall system and plan the construction requirements. Depending on the project, installation includes preparing and compacting a stable base, setting the wall to the proper alignment and elevation, installing drainage aggregate and water-management components, adding geogrid or other reinforcement where required, and correctly placing and compacting backfill.
Much of this work is hidden behind and beneath the finished wall, but it is critical to long-term performance. Poor drainage, inadequate base preparation, or improperly compacted backfill can increase pressure behind a wall and contribute to movement or failure.
Built for North Atlanta Conditions
North Atlanta's red clay, rolling terrain, and periods of heavy rainfall make water management particularly important in retaining wall construction. Clay-rich soil can hold moisture, and runoff moving down a slope can place additional pressure on a wall if water is not properly managed.A retaining wall therefore needs to manage both the grade and the water moving through the surrounding soil. Proper drainage and construction help reduce hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and limit the movement that can occur as clay soils become wet and dry.
On steep properties, retaining walls can also reshape difficult terrain rather than simply stabilize it. Terracing can break a hillside into more manageable, usable levels while creating safer transitions between elevations.
